Back in the 20th century, the Internet was comprised of a series of horseback riders. It could take up to 42 months to deliver a single funny animal picture and packets were often lost in transit due to flux or consumption. Luckily for us, a few of these artifacts were preserved on microfilm–a type of myspace used b4 ppl lrn2txt–and have since been uploaded to Internet 2 for our viewing pleasure. It’s not black and white, but the lolcat meme has got to be 40 years old by now

Some of these are cute/funny, but the ones with the clothes on creep me out. I think some of those must be stuffed and mounted by a taxidermist….. :(

I recognize the kittens who lost their mittens. It’s a picture from my book, The Three Little Kittens, one of my favorite childhood books. I still have it.

I know I’ve seen the two kittens in “dunce caps” somewhere. Must be from my days of combing second-hand book shops! ;)

I think the kittens in dunce caps, and the dog helping the kitten mail a letter are from “Toodles and Her Friends”. My mom and uncles had that book as kids and I remember reading it. You can get reproductions of it too.

Some of those are great, but some are obviously stuffed animals used to pose photographs, and that’s just horrible. The Victorians liked to do that, setting up whole dioramas of kittens and puppies. I don’t want to know where they got them. :-(

The candid shots are lovely though.

The animals are not “stuffed”. These pictures were taken by Harry Whittier Frees. Look him up…he used his own pets and some of his neighbors too.

The kitten and puppy with the post box and the two kittens with the dunce caps are photos from a picture book called “Snuggles,” about a naughty kitten and his pals. It was one of my dad’s favorite books from his childhood in the thirties.
