This kneading cat phenomenon is something that has always cracked me up and now the folks over at Ultra Kawaii have assembled some great kneading cat footage for us! Yay and super yay!

From Wikipedia:

Kneading is an activity common to all domestic cats whereby, when in a state of contentment, they alternatively push out and pull in their front paws, often alternating between right and left limbs. It is also called puddings in some antipodean cultures.

This may have an origin going back to their wild ancestors who would have had to tread down grass or foliage to make a temporary nest in which to rest, or possibly a remnant of the newborn kneading of the mother’s teat to stimulate milk secretion: kneading is often a precursor to sleeping. Many cats also purr when kneading; they also do this mostly when newborn, while feeding or trying to feed on their mother’s teat. The common association between the two behaviors may indicate the origin of purring as a remnant instinct.

Those cats are pawsome – if they are on Catster, they can be members in my I Knead You group! My favorite was Fry because he can do two things at once – hold a sock in his mouth while he kneads – that’s real talent!
