Koalas if you don’t know are not social and don’t come out of trees or down to the suburbs very often. But the main thing is that they don’t actually drink water normally at any time. All their food and water source is provided from the eucalyptus leaves that they eat. That’s why they sleep about 22 hours of the day because the calories and liquid intake is not enough to keep them awake long enough, but they consume enormous amounts of leaves in that time. So.. the following photos are even more amazing once that fact is known.

Many or most of these photos were during the Australian wildfires this year. The reason they are coming out and risking this kind of exposure is that these Koalas are desperate for water. Their sweetgum trees were casualties in the wildfire and they needed water from another source. Hence, human and koala contact.

Well those certainly are cute photos. If Popessa is correct lets hope that the trees grow back soon for these adorable animals.

My apartment is infested with koala bears. It’s the cutest infestation ever. Way better than cockroaches. When I turn on the light, a bunch of koala bears scatter, but I don’t want them too. I’m like, “Hey… Hold on fellows… Let me hold one of you, and feed you a leaf.” Koala bears are so cute, why do they have to be so far away from me. We need to ship a few over, so I can hold one, and pat it on its head.

Those are some pretty cool pictures. I have to say that I have never actually seen a koala before but I am sure that your experience with them was amazing. It is to bad though that they are only showing themselves because of the fires. Its a sad day when the natural habitat for any animal start to disappear.

It is wonderful to see, that some of these small Koala bears, were able to escape the horrific fires that you had in Austrailia. Even nicer to see that there were humans there to help them. The pictures ar great

Why does everyone call Koalas ‘bears’?
They are NOT bears! Koalas are marsupials. Bears are mammals. Please get it right.
Also, I simply cannot understand why there is so much bickering and bitching among you all about such lovely, inoffensive animals as Koalas.

These pics are precious, you lucky gal to be able to help such beautiful little creatures. But now, I am worried about their food and water situation. Is anything being done to help their dilemna ?

@Tatieanna- If you don’t like them, you don’t have to look at them. Don’t waste your and more importantly my time posting comments if you think they’re so ugly. Just leave.

@Cody- Tatieanna doesn’t even sound like an African American name? I could be completely wrong. Nevertheless, it was rude reguardless.

@Whoever “.” is- You haven’t even got the guts to give us a name and yet you have the audacity to try to tell someone off? Who do you think you are? xD Granted, it was somewhat entertaining. I thank you for that.

@Wendy marsupials are mammals. Koalas are called bears for the simple fact that they resemble teddy bears.

Wendy, so many people call thel Koala ‘bears’ because they are confusing them with the dangerous and carnivorous ‘drop bears’.

But I, like you are annoyed at people’s ignorance about marsupials.

Don’t get me wrong, I love koalas, but I hear they are very stinky and eat their mum’s pooh when young. Yuck!

I hope this new cosy-ing up to humans won’t hurt them in the long run. Bring back the eucalyptus, long live the koalas!

    The photos are beyond cute.

  45. Deanstick posted a comment on June 4th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Its a widely held belief that Koalas can eat only eucalyptus for their food and water, only a few scientists know about the age old war between the 2 species and that they have been deadly enemies since before man walked the earth.Given a choice, a koala will eat the leaves to continue the eucalyptus genocide that has prevailed for countless generations, and its a fairly common sight in Australia to see the lifeless body of the koala laying prone at the base of a eucalyptus tree, the tree’s take years to to arouse but when triggered, their vengance is horrific and lightning fast.WHO,S SIDE ARE YOU ON?

Yeah i agree. Welcome to the internet. People stop complaining about the rudeness of others. You get 2 kinds of internet surfers. The good and behaved kind who has a life with family and friends and then you get the kind whose a disgrace to humankind. Their parent are ashamed and is keeping them indoors away from civilisation. So the internet becomes their life where they can almost belong. Be kind to those people. It could be you!

  58. Martinhoegi posted a comment on October 28th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Goodness me, cute they look, cute they are not. Koalas are like most Australian animals, they have fantastic exterior but an extremelt violent and ferocious interioa. Please be aware that cuddling a koala can only happen at a zoo with a heavily sedtaed koala. Please do not come to Australia and try to pat them, you will lost your hand for sure, or at least damaged…
