The Elephant Cat

I am actually not too sure if this creature is more cat than elephant or more elephant than cat. It is a very rare animal, however, but it looks like thanks to the amazing photography skills of Daisy the Curly Cat, it has now been captured on film for eternity.

Snuzzy Baby Elephant Turns Five Months Old

Samudra, the Oregon Zoo’s celebrated Asian elephant calf, turns 5 months old today, and according to keepers he is more playful and inquisitive than ever.

“It appears he’s developed some athletic ability,” said Bob Lee, senior elephant keeper at the zoo. “He loves playing with a blue ball, knocking it around with his trunk soccer-style.”

The Oregon Zoo has a renowned breeding program for Asian elephants. More than 25 elephants have been born at the zoo, beginning with Packy in 1962. Samudra is the first third-generation elephant to be born in the United States.

An endangered species, Asian elephants are represented by an estimated 38,000 to 51,000 individuals living in fragmented populations in the wild. Agriculture, deforestation and conflict with humans pose a constant threat to wild Asian elephants.

One of These Things is Not Like the Others

Along the same lines as segments that I remember from my childhood on That’s Cat and Sesame Street, let’s see if you can make your way through the photo-shopping and figure out what animals don’t belong in the following series of pix. It’s pretty tricky. Don’t get all worked up over it if you can’t figure it out. It’s just a game. ;-)

Giraffes and Elephants and Refrigerators, OH MY!

Here’s a little mind game that’ll frustrate you, crack you up AND leave you analyzing your analyticals…

1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator? Stop and think about it before you scroll down…

The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe, and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.

2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?

Did you say: Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant, and close the refrigerator?

Wrong answer.

Correct answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your previous actions.

Hee hee.

3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend …. except one. Which animal does not attend?

Correct answer: The elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. You just put him in there, remember? This tests your memory. Okay, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your true abilities.

Oh, geez. Now the pressure’s really on.

4. There is a river you must cross but it is used by crocodiles, and you do not have a boat. How do you manage it?

Correct answer: You jump into the river and swim across. Have you not been listening? All the crocodiles are attending the animal meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

Oh man. Turns out I don’t learn that quickly from my ~~mistaykes~~ … er, mistakes…

Vintage London Snuzz

These fantastic shots are a part of the photographic archive of the Zoological Society of London, which can be browsed in its entirety here. Some of the images in the collection date back to the late 19th century, and show how much the London Zoo has changed over the years.

The only thing that hasn’t changed? The snuzz factor–still very, very high.
