Since today is all about recognizing animals that rarely get the spotlight, and since we unanimously decided we love sloths, this post is about… sloths! Here’s a video of a baby sloth doing weird cute things like scratching his head with his foot, scratching his butt with his hand, and hanging on to the rim of his crib with all four paws. Sloths are nature’s muppets! Not only do they look like their limbs are being manipulated by wires, but they spend all their time trying to put on a show and not actually succeeding. My favorite part is his less-charismatic glassy-eyed pal just looks at the camera cutely.

Here’s the thing about sloths: You either love them or hate them. They’re very controversial in the realm of cute animals. I know at least two people who describe them as their least favorite animal and at least two who describe them as their favorite animal. In photos they can be cute, especially as babies. But in videos? They border on abomination. STILL, they have some kind of essence of snuzziness, buried somewhere deep behind their cold apathetic eyes. What do you think, Snuzzy readers? Should sloth coverage continue on Snuzzy, or should I just keep posting all otters all the time?

This 60 Second Science Podcast came through my speakers the other day and it got me thinking about these poor little sloths, what with their animal kingdom buddies always calling them lazy and all. Sheesh.

But it turns out they’re not as lazy as people think. According to the story:

Using equipment designed to monitor the brain waves of animals in the wild, the scientists found that sloths actually spend less than 10 hours a day asleep in the trees.

And that sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I know my cats spend more time asleep every day than that. Plus, these guys are cute. They need their snuzzy sleep.
